Upgrading from carpet or vinyl to hardwood is one of the smartest investments a Lisle homeowner can make. Hardwood floors increase resale value, improve indoor air quality by eliminating carpet fibers that trap allergens, and create a warmth that synthetic materials cannot replicate. Turn Key Designs provides professional hardwood installation and refinishing for Lisle residents, combining material expertise with the precision these floors demand.

New Installation or Refinishing

Some Lisle homes, particularly those built in the 1960s and 1970s, have original hardwood under carpet. Before recommending new installation, we evaluate whether those existing floors can be restored. If the boards are structurally sound and have enough material for sanding, refinishing costs less and preserves the character of the original wood.

Our refinishing process follows National Wood Flooring Association standards: sanding with proper grit sequencing, board repair or replacement, stain application (if desired), and three coats of water-based polyurethane. Water-based finishes dry faster, produce less odor, and do not yellow over time compared to oil-based alternatives.

For homes where hardwood was never installed or existing floors are beyond restoration, we install new hardwood selected at our Lombard showroom, about 15 minutes north.

Species Options

White Oak

The most popular species we install in Lisle. White oak’s tight grain structure provides natural moisture resistance, accepts stains evenly, and works in both traditional and contemporary settings. Available in widths from 3 to 7 inches with a Janka hardness rating of 1,360.

Red Oak

Red oak offers a more pronounced grain pattern at a lower price point. Best suited for Lisle living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms where moisture is not a concern.

Hickory

At 1,820 Janka, hickory is the hardest domestic species available. Its dramatic grain variation works well in rustic, farmhouse, and transitional Lisle homes, and it stands up to heavy foot traffic and pets.

Engineered Hardwood

Recommended for Lisle homes with concrete subfloors, radiant heating, or below-grade installations. Engineered hardwood provides the appearance of solid wood with better dimensional stability across seasonal temperature and humidity changes. The top layer can be refinished two to three times.

Installation Process

  1. Site visit: subfloor evaluation, moisture testing, levelness assessment
  2. Material acclimation in your home (72+ hours per NWFA guidelines)
  3. Subfloor preparation: leveling, moisture barrier, repairs as needed
  4. Installation: nail-down on plywood, glue-down or floating on concrete
  5. Stain and finish for site-finished floors (three coats water-based polyurethane)
  6. Baseboards, quarter-round, and transition strips

Permits in Lisle

Standard hardwood installation does not require a building permit in Lisle. If the project involves structural subfloor modifications, the Village of Lisle Building Division may require permits. We manage all permitting as part of our design-build process.

Hardwood With Other Renovations

New hardwood throughout the main level pairs naturally with a kitchen remodel or bathroom renovation. We coordinate hardwood alongside cabinetry, countertops, and whole-home renovations through our full-service general contracting model.

For rooms where hardwood is not ideal, we also install luxury vinyl plank, laminate, and tile. See our comparison guide for trade-offs between options.
