Luxury Vinyl Plank Installation in DuPage County
Luxury vinyl plank has become the most versatile flooring material available for residential use. It is 100% waterproof, it handles heavy daily traffic without showing wear, and it is available in wood-look and stone-look designs that are nearly indistinguishable from real hardwood and natural tile at standing height. For homeowners who need a floor that can go in every room of the house, from the kitchen to the bathroom to the basement, LVP is the only material that checks every box without compromise.
At Turn Key Designs, we install premium rigid-core luxury vinyl plank in homes throughout DuPage County. We carry products that use SPC (stone polymer composite) and WPC (wood polymer composite) core technology, and we help homeowners understand which core type, wear layer thickness, and visual style will perform best for their situation.
Why Luxury Vinyl Plank Is Different Now
Early vinyl flooring earned a poor reputation because it was thin, flexible, and looked obviously fake. Modern luxury vinyl plank is a fundamentally different product. The rigid core provides structural stability and dimensional integrity. The photographic imaging layer creates realistic wood grain patterns with depth and variation between planks. The wear layer protects against scratches, stains, and fading. And the attached underlayment provides comfort underfoot and sound dampening without requiring a separate pad.
The result is a floor that is warmer and quieter to walk on than tile, more water-resistant than any wood product, more scratch-resistant than hardwood, and available at a price point that makes it accessible for whole-home installations. The Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI) provides testing standards and certification for resilient flooring products, and we recommend certified products that meet their performance criteria.
SPC vs. WPC Core Technology
SPC (Stone Polymer Composite)
SPC cores are denser and more rigid than WPC. They handle temperature swings without expanding or contracting, which makes SPC the better choice for rooms with large windows that get direct sunlight, sunrooms, and spaces where temperatures may fluctuate. SPC is also thinner than WPC at equivalent performance levels, which can matter when matching floor heights at transitions to other rooms. SPC feels firmer underfoot, which some homeowners prefer and others find less comfortable for extended standing.
WPC (Wood Polymer Composite)
WPC cores are slightly thicker and more cushioned than SPC. They feel warmer and softer underfoot, provide better sound absorption, and are more comfortable for barefoot walking. WPC is an excellent choice for bedrooms, living rooms, and spaces where comfort is a higher priority than temperature resistance. WPC is also slightly easier to install on subfloors that have minor imperfections because the softer core material conforms better to small irregularities.
We stock both core types at our Lombard showroom where you can walk on samples and feel the difference in person. For a side-by-side comparison with hardwood and laminate, read our flooring comparison guide.
Where LVP Works Best
The waterproof nature of luxury vinyl plank opens up rooms where other flooring types are risky or impractical:
- Kitchens: Spills, splashes, and the occasional leak under the sink are no threat to LVP. It stands up to constant foot traffic and is comfortable for long stretches of standing while cooking.
- Bathrooms: Fully waterproof performance in the wettest room of the house. LVP eliminates the cold-tile problem while providing the water resistance that hardwood and laminate cannot.
- Basements: Below-grade spaces carry moisture risk from concrete subfloors. LVP installed with a moisture barrier is the most practical and attractive option for finished basements.
- Mudrooms and laundry rooms: High-moisture, high-traffic utility areas where durability and easy cleaning are essential.
- Living rooms and bedrooms: LVP runs beautifully through main living spaces, providing a continuous wood-look floor from room to room without transitions or material changes.
Wear Layer Thickness
The wear layer is the transparent protective coating on top of the visual layer that determines how long the floor will resist scratches, scuffs, and daily wear. Wear layer thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch):
- 12 mil: Suitable for light residential use in low-traffic rooms like guest bedrooms and home offices.
- 20 mil: The standard for most residential applications. Handles pets, kids, and daily family traffic without showing wear for ten to fifteen years or more.
- 28+ mil: Commercial-grade protection for the highest traffic areas or homeowners who want maximum longevity. We recommend 28 mil for kitchens, entryways, and homes with large dogs.
We typically specify 20 mil as our minimum recommendation for any room with regular foot traffic. The cost difference between 12 mil and 20 mil is small relative to the project cost, and the durability improvement is significant.
Professional Installation vs. DIY
LVP is marketed as a DIY-friendly product, and many homeowners attempt self-installation. The results are often acceptable in a single room but break down when the project spans multiple rooms, requires transitions between different floor levels, encounters out-of-square walls, or needs to work around existing door casings, stairs, and built-in cabinetry. Professional installation ensures tight joints, proper expansion gaps, clean transitions, and correct subfloor preparation. All of our installations follow the manufacturer’s specifications, which is also required to maintain warranty coverage. The National Wood Flooring Association and RFCI both publish detailed installation standards that our installers follow for every project.
LVP as Part of a Renovation
Luxury vinyl plank is frequently selected during kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, and whole-home remodeling projects. Its waterproof performance makes it the go-to recommendation for kitchens and baths, and its visual consistency across product lines means you can run the same LVP through main living areas while using tile in wet zones, maintaining a cohesive look throughout the house.
Our interior design team coordinates LVP selection with countertop materials, cabinet finishes, and wall colors to create a unified material palette. See all flooring options we offer, or compare LVP to hardwood and laminate at our showroom.
