Wheaton’s established neighborhoods are full of homes where hardwood floors are part of the home’s identity. From the stately colonials near downtown to the mid-century ranches along the western corridors, hardwood connects Wheaton homes to a tradition of quality that synthetic alternatives cannot replicate. Turn Key Designs installs and refinishes hardwood floors for Wheaton homeowners from our showroom in Lombard, just east on Roosevelt Road.

New Installation vs. Refinishing

The first question we answer on every Wheaton hardwood project is whether you need new floors or whether your existing floors can be restored. Many Wheaton homes, especially those built before 1970, have original hardwood under layers of carpet, vinyl, or even linoleum. When those floors are structurally sound, refinishing is almost always the better investment: it costs less per square foot than new installation and preserves the character of the original wood.

If the existing hardwood is too damaged, too thin to sand again, or simply not present, we install new hardwood matched to your home’s style and your family’s needs. Either way, the process starts with a site visit to evaluate your subfloor and test moisture levels against the standards published by the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA).

Species We Install

White Oak

The most popular species in Wheaton. White oak’s tight grain structure provides superior moisture resistance compared to red oak, which is an important consideration in a climate that swings from humid summers to bone-dry winters. Available in widths from 3 to 7 inches, white oak accepts stains evenly and complements both traditional and contemporary Wheaton interiors.

Red Oak

Red oak features a more pronounced grain pattern and tends to be the most affordable domestic hardwood option. It works well in Wheaton homes with traditional decor, though its open pores make it less ideal for kitchens and other rooms with moisture exposure.

Hickory

The hardest domestic species we install (1,820 on the Janka hardness scale). Hickory’s dramatic grain variation creates a rustic, character-rich floor that stands up to heavy foot traffic, pets, and active families. Popular in Wheaton homes with farmhouse or transitional aesthetics.

Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood uses a real wood top layer over a dimensionally stable core. We recommend it for Wheaton homes with concrete subfloors, in-floor radiant heating, or below-grade installations where solid hardwood would be at risk for moisture damage. The top layer can be sanded and refinished two to three times over its lifespan.

The Installation Process

  1. Subfloor evaluation: moisture testing, levelness check, structural assessment
  2. Material acclimation: minimum 72 hours in the home per NWFA guidelines
  3. Subfloor preparation: leveling, moisture barrier installation, repairs
  4. Installation: nail-down on plywood, glue-down or floating for engineered on concrete
  5. Finish: site-finished floors receive stain and three coats of water-based polyurethane; pre-finished floors get trim work
  6. Baseboards, quarter-round, and transition strips

Permits in Wheaton

Standard hardwood installation in Wheaton does not require a building permit. If the project involves structural subfloor repairs or modifications to heating systems beneath the floor, the City of Wheaton Building Inspections department may require a permit. We handle all permitting as part of our design-build process.

Hardwood With Other Projects

Wheaton homeowners often install hardwood alongside other renovations. New hardwood throughout the main level pairs naturally with a kitchen remodel or bathroom renovation. We coordinate hardwood with cabinetry, countertops, and whole-home renovations so every trade works in the correct sequence.

For rooms where hardwood is not ideal, we also install luxury vinyl plank, laminate, and tile. Our guide on hardwood vs. laminate vs. vinyl covers the trade-offs.
