Most Lombard homes were built with closets that are afterthoughts. A single rod, a shelf, and a hollow-core door. For homeowners who have accumulated a decade or two of life in the same house, these closets stopped working a long time ago. Turn Key Designs custom-designs and builds closet systems that actually fit how you store, organize, and access your belongings.

We are a design-build firm headquartered right here in Lombard at 219 S Main Street. Our showroom has closet system samples, finish options, and hardware displays so you can see exactly what your custom closet will look and feel like before we build it.

Types of Custom Closets We Build

Lombard’s housing stock is primarily ranch homes, split-levels, and bi-levels from the 1950s through 1970s. These homes typically have minimal closet space by modern standards. We design and build closet systems for every room and purpose:

  • Walk-in master closets with double-hang sections, adjustable shelving, dedicated shoe storage, jewelry drawers, and integrated LED lighting
  • Reach-in bedroom closets redesigned with tiered hanging, pull-out bins, and shelf dividers that triple the usable capacity of the same footprint
  • Linen closets with pull-out baskets, adjustable shelf heights, and labeled compartments for towels, sheets, and toiletries
  • Mudroom and entry closets with bench seating, coat hooks, shoe cubbies, and overhead storage for seasonal gear
  • Pantry closets with pull-out drawers, lazy susans, and door-mounted racks that make every inch accessible
  • Kids’ closets with lower rods and shelves sized for children, designed to grow with them through adjustable components

Materials and Finishes

Our closet systems are built from commercial-grade melamine and plywood, with edge banding and finish options that range from clean white and dove gray to wood-grain laminates and painted finishes. Hardware includes soft-close drawer slides, chrome or brushed nickel rods and hooks, and hamper pullouts. All components are selected at our Lombard showroom alongside finishes for any connected spaces you may be updating, like bathrooms or bedrooms.

The difference between our custom closet systems and the wire shelving or DIY kits sold at hardware stores is structural. Our systems are wall-mounted or floor-based with solid construction that supports real weight over time without sagging, bowing, or pulling away from the wall.

Our Design Process

We start with a measurement visit to your home. We document the closet dimensions, ceiling height, door swing, light fixture locations, and any electrical outlets or HVAC vents in the space. We also ask about your wardrobe: how many hanging garments, folded items, shoes, accessories, and seasonal pieces you need to accommodate.

From there, our design team creates a 3D rendering of the proposed closet layout. You see exactly where everything will go before we build anything. Adjustments are made until the design fits your needs perfectly. This is part of our broader design-build process that applies to every project we take on.

Closets as Part of a Larger Project

Custom closets frequently come up during larger renovation projects. A home addition that includes a new master suite needs a properly designed walk-in closet. A bathroom remodel often reveals opportunities to reclaim adjacent closet space. A whole-home renovation is the ideal time to address closet storage throughout the house. The National Association of Home Builders consistently ranks closet and storage space among the top features buyers look for, which also makes custom closets a smart investment if you plan to sell.
