Flooring Installation in DuPage County
Flooring is the largest continuous surface in your home. It sets the color tone for every room, it absorbs more daily wear than any other material you choose, and it connects spaces together visually as you move through the house. Choosing the right flooring for each room matters. Installing it correctly on a properly prepared subfloor matters even more.
At Turn Key Designs, we install hardwood, engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate, and tile flooring in homes throughout DuPage County. We also handle all subfloor preparation, transitions between rooms, and coordination with other trades when flooring is part of a larger kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, or whole-home remodeling project.
Flooring Options We Install
Hardwood Flooring
Solid and engineered hardwood in oak, maple, walnut, hickory, and white oak. Prefinished or site-finished. Hardwood remains the gold standard for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. It adds warmth, character, and measurable resale value. According to the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), hardwood floors are one of the top features homebuyers look for when evaluating properties. Engineered hardwood can also be installed over radiant heat systems and on concrete subfloors where solid hardwood is not viable.
Laminate Flooring
Modern laminate has advanced significantly from the products that gave the category a bad reputation fifteen years ago. High-quality laminate now features photorealistic wood or stone visuals, embossed-in-register textures that align the grain pattern with the surface feel, and AC-rated wear layers that handle heavy residential and light commercial traffic. Laminate is scratch-resistant, fade-resistant, and typically costs 40 to 60 percent less than hardwood including installation. It is a practical choice for high-traffic family rooms, hallways, and basements. For a detailed comparison of flooring types, see our guide on hardwood vs. laminate vs. vinyl flooring.
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)
Luxury vinyl plank is the fastest-growing flooring category in the residential market, and the reasons are practical. LVP is 100% waterproof, which means a kitchen sink leak or a bathroom splash does not become a flooring replacement. It is comfortable to stand on for long periods, durable against scratches and dents, and available in wood and stone visuals that are nearly indistinguishable from the real materials at standing height. We install rigid-core SPC and WPC vinyl with attached underlayment for the best feel and sound performance.
Tile
Porcelain and ceramic tile for bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, and mudrooms. Large-format tiles (12×24 and larger) create a modern, clean look with fewer grout lines to maintain. Patterned tile adds visual interest in smaller spaces. We handle all tile layout planning, precision cutting, and grouting. Tile is especially well-suited for bathroom floors where water resistance and easy cleaning are non-negotiable.
Subfloor Preparation
The most common cause of premature flooring failure is poor subfloor preparation. Before any flooring material goes down, our team completes a thorough subfloor evaluation:
- Level checks across the entire surface. High spots are ground down and low spots are filled with leveling compound to meet manufacturer specifications.
- Moisture testing using a calibrated moisture meter. This is critical for hardwood and laminate, which can warp, cup, or buckle if installed over a subfloor with excessive moisture content. The NWFA installation guidelines set specific moisture thresholds for different flooring types.
- Structural inspection for squeaky, bouncy, or uneven subfloors that need reinforcement before the new floor can go down.
- Appropriate underlayment installation matched to the flooring type and subfloor material.
- Proper expansion gaps at all walls, transitions, and fixed objects to allow for seasonal movement.
Choosing the Right Floor for Each Room
Not every flooring material works in every room. We help homeowners make the right match based on the specific demands of each space:
- Kitchens: LVP, porcelain tile, or engineered hardwood. See our dedicated kitchen flooring page for a detailed breakdown of each option.
- Bathrooms: Porcelain tile or LVP. Solid hardwood should never be used in bathrooms. See our bathroom flooring page.
- Living rooms and dining rooms: Hardwood, engineered hardwood, or high-end LVP.
- Basements: LVP or engineered hardwood installed with a moisture barrier. Solid hardwood is not recommended below grade.
- Bedrooms: Hardwood or carpet. We can coordinate carpet installation through our trade network.
- Mudrooms and laundry rooms: LVP or tile for waterproof performance in high-moisture, high-traffic zones.
Flooring Transitions and Whole-Home Flow
One of the most overlooked details in flooring projects is how different materials transition from room to room. A clumsy transition strip between the kitchen and living room can undermine an otherwise beautiful floor installation. Whenever possible, we run the same flooring material continuously through connected spaces to create a seamless visual flow. When material changes are necessary (tile in the bathroom to hardwood in the hallway, for example), we use flush transitions or custom-profiled moldings that look intentional rather than like an afterthought.
