Frequently Asked Questions

We get a lot of questions from homeowners considering a remodeling project. Here are honest answers to the ones we hear most often. If your question is not covered here, call us at (630) 353-1186 or send us a message.

About Turn Key Designs

What does “design-build” mean?

Design-build means one company handles both the design (space planning, material selection, architectural plans) and the construction (demolition, building, installation, project management). Instead of hiring a designer and a contractor separately, you work with one integrated team. This eliminates the miscommunication between separate companies that causes change orders, delays, and budget overruns. Our guide on why design-build saves time and money covers the advantages in detail.

Where are you located?

Our office and luxury showroom are at 219 S Main Street, Lombard, IL 60148. We serve homeowners throughout DuPage County, including Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Downers Grove, Lisle, Villa Park, Glendale Heights, Carol Stream, and Winfield.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We carry general liability insurance, workers’ compensation insurance, and are registered with all municipalities where we work in DuPage County. Our electricians and plumbers hold valid state licenses through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. We are happy to provide a certificate of insurance upon request.

What is your showroom like?

Our Lombard showroom is a hands-on decision-making space where you can see and touch the actual materials we use: cabinet door styles and finishes, countertop samples (quartz, granite, marble, butcher block), flooring options (hardwood, laminate, vinyl), hardware, fixtures, and tile. It is designed to help you make confident choices before construction begins, not after.

Getting Started

How do I get started?

Call us at (630) 353-1186 or fill out the contact form to schedule a free consultation. We will meet at your home or our Lombard showroom to discuss your project, understand your goals, and walk you through our design-build process. There is no pressure and no obligation.

Do you offer free estimates?

We offer a free initial consultation where we discuss your project goals, timeline, and budget range. For a detailed, accurate estimate, we conduct an in-home assessment and provide a comprehensive proposal with line-item pricing. This requires a design investment because we do not believe in ballpark numbers that change later. We give you a real number based on real specifications, real material selections, and a real construction plan.

What areas do you serve?

We primarily serve DuPage County, including Lombard, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Downers Grove, Lisle, Villa Park, Glendale Heights, Carol Stream, and Winfield. We also take projects in surrounding areas. Contact us to discuss your location.

Project Planning

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

A typical kitchen remodel takes 6 to 12 weeks of construction, depending on scope. A cosmetic refresh (new cabinets, countertops, flooring within the existing layout) takes 6 to 8 weeks. A full renovation with layout changes, custom cabinetry, and structural modifications takes 10 to 16 weeks. Add 4 to 8 weeks of pre-construction time for design, material ordering, and permitting. See our kitchen remodeling cost guide for detailed scope and pricing information.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

A standard full bathroom remodel takes 4 to 8 weeks of construction. A half-bath update can be done in 2 to 3 weeks. A master bathroom with a custom shower, heated floors, and specialty tile may take 8 to 10 weeks. Pre-construction planning adds 3 to 6 weeks. Read our bathroom remodeling timeline guide for a detailed week-by-week breakdown.

Can I live in my home during the remodel?

For most single-room projects (one kitchen, one bathroom), yes. We set up dust barriers, protect your flooring, and keep the work contained. You will need access to an alternative bathroom during a bathroom remodel and a temporary kitchen setup (microwave, coffee maker, mini-fridge) during a kitchen remodel. For whole-home renovations, moving out temporarily is often the better option for your comfort and project efficiency.

Do you handle permits?

Yes. We manage the entire permit process from application through final inspection. We know the requirements for each DuPage County municipality and factor the permit timeline into your project schedule. You should never have to visit a building department yourself. For details on how permits work across DuPage County’s suburbs, see our permit guide.

Budget and Pricing

How much does a kitchen remodel cost?

Kitchen remodels in DuPage County typically range from $15,000 for a cosmetic refresh to $150,000 or more for a high-end gut renovation. The average mid-range kitchen remodel falls in the $40,000 to $75,000 range. The biggest cost drivers are cabinetry (30 to 40 percent of budget), countertops (10 to 15 percent), and labor (20 to 35 percent). We provide a detailed, line-item estimate so you know exactly where every dollar goes. Read our full kitchen remodeling cost breakdown.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, we require a deposit to begin work, typically 10 to 30 percent of the project value depending on scope and material ordering requirements. The remaining balance is structured in milestone payments tied to project progress, not arbitrary dates. You never pay ahead of the work completed. This payment structure aligns with National Association of the Remodeling Industry best practices for residential projects.

What if costs change during the project?

Our thorough pre-construction planning process is designed to minimize surprises. However, older homes can reveal unexpected conditions: outdated wiring, plumbing issues, structural concerns that were not visible during the assessment phase. If additional work is needed, we present the issue, explain the options, and provide a written change order with exact pricing before proceeding. Nothing changes without your written approval.

Design and Materials

Do I have to visit the showroom?

It is not required, but we strongly recommend it. Choosing materials from photos or small samples leads to surprises when they are installed at scale. Our showroom lets you see full cabinet door samples, large countertop pieces, and flooring installed in real settings. Clients who visit the showroom almost always feel more confident in their selections and have fewer regrets after installation.

Can I provide my own materials?

We can discuss this on a case-by-case basis. In general, we prefer to source materials through our vendor relationships because we can ensure quality, manage delivery timing to match the construction schedule, and stand behind the product. If you purchase materials independently, we cannot warranty those items, and delays in your material delivery can impact the construction timeline.

Do you offer 3D renderings?

Yes. For kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, and other complex projects, we provide 3D renderings so you can see your new space before construction begins. This is one of the most valuable parts of our design process. It eliminates guesswork and gives you confidence that the finished result will match your vision.

During Construction

Who will be in my home?

You will have a dedicated project manager who is your single point of contact throughout the project. Our crew members and vetted subcontractors (electricians, plumbers, tile setters) will be on-site at scheduled times. We introduce everyone who will be working in your home and maintain consistent teams whenever possible. All subcontractors carry their own insurance and are registered with the relevant DuPage County municipalities.

How do you handle cleanup?

We clean up at the end of every workday. Dust barriers are maintained throughout the project, floors in non-work areas are protected, and we never leave your home in a state that is unsafe or unlivable (for projects where you are living in the home). At project completion, we do a thorough final cleaning before your walkthrough.

What warranty do you offer?

We stand behind our workmanship with a written warranty. Specific warranty terms vary by project type and are detailed in your contract before work begins. Product and material warranties from manufacturers are passed through to you with our support. If something is not right after project completion, we address it. That is part of the Turn Key commitment.
